Anthelmintica

There are several classes of anthelmintics: benzimidazoles, salicylanilides and substituted phenols, imidazothiazoles, tetrahydropyrimidines, organophosphates, macrocyclic lactones, amino-acetonitrile derivatives, the cyclic octadepsipeptides and the spiroindoles.

Albendazole

  • Appearance: White or almost white powder
  • Identification: Positive
  • Related compounds: ≤ 1.0 %
  • Loss on Drying: ≤ 0.5 %
  • Residue of Ignition: ≤ 0.2 %
  • Iron: (0.003 %)
  • Specific absorbance: 132 - 156
  • Assay: 98.5 - 102.0 %
  • Particle size: 90% ≤ 20 Microns

Mebendazole

  • Description: White to slightly yellowish powder, almost odourless
  • Solubility: Melts at 288º C to 292º C
  • Identification by IR: Complies
  • Loss on drying: 0.28%
  • Heavy metals: < 0.002%
  • Chromatographic purity by TLC: Complies
  • Assay (on dried basis): 99.51%
  • Residue on ignition: 0.067%
  • Bulk Density: 0.36 g/cc

Piperazine Citrate

  • Characters: a white or almost white crystalline or granular powder. It melts at about 190°C.
  • Solubility: freely soluble in water
  • Identification (A) Infrared absorption (IR): IR spectrum of sample is concordant with that of the reference standard
  • Appearance of solution: 5 % w/v solution “S” is clear and not more intensely coloured than reference solution B8
  • Related substances: Ethylene diamine – NMT 0.25 % - Triethylene diamine – NMT 0.25 %
  • Heavy metals: NMT 20 ppm
  • Water: between 10.0 % and 14.0 %
  • Sulfated ash: NMT 0.1 %
  • Assay (anhydrous basis): between 98.0 % to 101.0 % of C24H46N6O14

Praziquantel

  • Characters: white or practically white crystalline powder
  • Solubility: very slightly soluble in water, freely soluble in alcohol and in chloroform
  • Identification: IR: corresponding to Praziquantel CRS
  • Melting range: 136°C ~ 142°C
  • Heavy metals: NMT 0.002 %
  • Phosphate: NMT 0.05 %
  • Loss on drying: NMT 0.5 %
  • Residue on ignition: NMT 0.1 %
